Each piece of jewellery made of precious metal has to be hallmarked by law. The hallmark is made up of the sponsor's mark, for example, Deacon and Son (Swindon) Ltd (pictured left), the standard mark which denotes the metal and quality, the assay mark which can show the metal and where the object was assayed, and a date letter representing the year of manufacture - 1999/2000 having a unique mark for the new millennium (pictured above right) The Golden Jubilee has its own unique historic hallmark (pictured below right).
